Pressestimmen

"I'm particularly interested in stories of immigrants and I loved Fatima Farheen Mirza's A Place for Us, about an Indian family living in America" (Anne Tyler Observer)"Deeply moving... The story comes together gradually, through the perspective of various family members, as it weaves through different points in time. Mirza's writing is poignantly beautiful" (Daily Mail)"I loved every minute of this novel; Mirza's prose and her story squeezed my heart, and I had to take a very long, deep breath upon finishing the book. This is a writer to watch out for" (Stylist)"The depth of the storytelling and the beauty of the language makes this debut something to treasure. Highly recommended" (John Boyne)"Telling the story via multiple perspectives, the author paints an incredibly textured and compassionate portrait of the characters’ lives. Their love for one another is undeniable, yet their inability to communicate it is devastating. As they collectively and individually struggle with the expectations of their heritage as well as contemporary life, A Place For Us is a timeless, yet also timely, family epic" (Aisling O'Leary Irish Times)

...with insights in muslim family life... very sorry I reached the last page... I grew very fond of each character and the change of perspective and timeline made the even more heartbreaking/heartwarming

One of my favorite books of 2018!

It’s Hadia’s wedding day and more than anything else she has wished for her brother Amar to show up and take part in it. She hasn’t seen him for quite some time and then he is there. However, things do not turn out so well, but they never have with Amar. Flashback to the times when the kids were still young and all five of them a family: Rafiq who left his home country in the Middle East when he was still a teenager to make a career in the US, mother Layla who came to the country when she married Rafiq, the two daughters Hadia and Huda and their younger brother Amar. Raising three kids in Muslim believe in a foreign country, handing on your convictions and traditions when they are daily endangered by a different set of believes and culture is never easy. Conflicts must arise and so they do until Amar leaves the family. But there are still things none of them knows and Hadia’s wedding might be the day to reveal some secrets. There is no single word to describe Fatima Farheen Mirza’s novel. I was stunned, excited, angry, understanding, I felt pity for the characters, I loathed them, I could understand them and I just wondered about them. I guess there are few emotions that did not come up when reading it and certainly it never left me cold. Is there more you can expect when reading a book? I don’t think so.There is so much in it that I hardly know where to begin: there are typical family relationships that are questioned when children grow up. We have the problem of immigrant parents who do not fully assimilate with the welcoming culture but want to hand on something from their native background which necessarily collides within the children. There is love, forbidden love and rules of how a partner is to be found. There are differences made between the daughters and the son, rivalry between the siblings and we have parents who have to question the way they interact with their children and sometimes do not know what to do at all.It might stem from the fact that I am female, but I liked Hadia best and felt most sympathetic with her. Even though Rafiq explains that he only wanted to protect his daughters, the fact that he limited her in all respects: friends, personal freedom as a child or teenager, even her academic success wasn’t greeted with enthusiasm because the father wanted his daughter to become a mother a take care of a future husband. She had to fight so many wars and was always treated inferior solely because she was a girl, I absolutely fest sorry for her.Rafiq never reaches the point where he can fully accept his daughters as equals and this is the point where I most detested him. He understood what he did wrong with his son, but he makes masses of excuses and justifies his parenting with his own experiences and upbringing. This is just pitiable because he is stuck in a view of the world which he could have overcome in all the years in a western society. I can follow his thoughts at the end of the novel and surely this is quite authentic, I know people in reality whose world view shares a lot of similarities and I surely would like to know how one can open their eyes and make them overcome the stubborn ideas of women being inferior and parents knowing everything best. I was actually pretty angry at the end when Rafiq finally gets a voice and can ultimately share his thoughts since there isn’t much I could agree with. All in all, an outstanding novel which addresses so many of today’s issues and surely shouldn’t be missed.

I absolutely loved this book which focuses on an Indian American family who have come to the United States and are now making their home in California. The story opens at Hadia's wedding where her brother Amar has come to reconcile with the family after having left home several years earlier. From that point, the book moves back and forth in time as bits and pieces of this family's story is revealed. We see Layla and Raffiq as a young couple, just starting out. We see the childhoods of Hadia and her younger sister Huda, and her younger brother, Amar. Different key events in their lives are shared, giving some background for the current state of their relationship now. This is a family saga that absolutely captured my attention from the very first page. I found each of the characters interesting and enjoyed how Mirza moved the story in time and perspective. I loved that although this is an immigrant story that is well done, it is also the story of more than just a family trying to assimilate in a new country and culture. Mirza's characters each have their own stories and flaws that are developed. I felt like this picture of a family is well done, that Mirza shows the good, the bad, the beautiful, the ugly. The resolution of the story is also well done, although not tied up with a pretty bow, either.A Place For Us will very likely be one of the best books I read in 2018. I can't wait to see what else this author creates.

Sorry, but I do not know what all the rave reviews are about. I found this book to be almost impossible to finish, but finish it I did. Waaaay too much religious stuff for my taste. I did plod thru this tho, because of all the rave reviews, and I figured I would find what everybody was raving about. Sadly, but I did not. I could not pinpoint any specific story line. It seemed to be about an emotionally abusive father now facing his mortality, and regretting the way he treated his son. Nevermind that he also didn't treat his two daughters much better, but the SON, oh yes, the SON. Typical religious thinking, the SON is the most important, the SON is the only one, the SON, the SON, the SON; thank the MALE gods that I have a SON. Yes I mistreated my children, but I mostly regret mistreating my SON. If you're religious and think the men are appointed by whatever 'god' is, then this is a good book for you. Me, forget it.

One of the best books Ever! I can't wait to see what this author writes next. This was one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It does not matter your religion. I am Catholic and I can say that I truly loved this book and reading about the Muslim faith. Ms Mirza has a beautiful way of writing . I would almost like to see a follow up book to see what is going on with Amar and the rest of the family. I really felt for the father. I would like to see him make things right with his son. As we all age everything comes into a more clear perspective and we realize that we need to give a little more, lighten up and enjoy life more. I will appreciate looking up at the night sky and my surroundings more now after reading this book. For a young woman in her twenties to write such a wonderful book while going to college is amazing to me. All I did in college was drink and study in that order. Bravo!!!

I hesitate to pen this review because from where I sit, no words of mine could possibly do justice to this breathtakingly beautiful story...but I think to not contribute to the reviews that could encourage other readers to pick this up would be an even greater injustice to the author, who deserves every single word of praise and much more. While this is definitely a beautiful story, it is so unbelievably tragic that I think I'll be revisiting it for many days, and I will most definitely be reading it again...This book both broke my heart and made me smile throughout. Each character is so masterfully and intricately written that you feel as if you truly know them. You feel the love as it blooms in their hearts, their sadness and devastation as each strand of cord that ties them together is broken, their anxiety and inner conflict when they are keeping a secret, their regret and feelings of guilt that motivate them to do both everything and nothing to fix themselves and one another. Even Huda, who seems to be more of a minor character comes through with strength as the decades pass. I love the way that Fatima Farheen Mirza continues to give entirely different perspectives on the same events from each of the characters in the book. Hadia's great love for her entire family that is sometimes challenged for her desire for individual freedoms and equality. Layla's blind love for her son is counterbalanced for the jealousy she guiltily feels over her daughter's preference for Rafiq when they are young. Amar's desire for approval is diminished by what he feels is constant rejection from his community. What was most interesting to me was to recognize that Amar and Rafiq were mirror images of one another. Both wanted nothing more than love and acceptance from one another, but both were too prideful and afraid of rejection to allow themselves to actually pursue it. The saddest part about this story are the feelings they keep hidden in the dark recesses of their hearts and souls until it is too late. So many times throughout the book I found myself saying, JUST SAY IT! TELL THEM! But how like us all it is to keep these most important things tucked away, only to allow our anger and knee-jerk reactions dominate our relationships?Rafiq's narrative is the most heart-wrenching to read as a parent. I related so much to both Hadia and Amar because everyone has been the rebellious teenager who wishes they could just be accepted as they are. But as a parent, and understanding Rafiq's regret at the ripple effect his words and actions had not just in his own life, but in the life of his children left me speechless. How often do I say things to my children that hurt them because I think it is the right thing to say, when really I want to give them the love they are yearning for? The final piece of the story, in which Rafiq finally sets aside his pride and delivers a message to Amar via Abbas, is where I finally teared up and where we finally see Rafiq come full circle to his own desires to know his father as a boy.Beautiful story, beautiful prose and beautiful tragedy. This book is one that will live on for many, many years!
